Over the last year or so, we have had many meetings and consultations with City Councillors, City Council Land Services Department, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue as well as with residents and local businesses with regard to Parking restrictions during major events at Hampden Park and Daytime Parking Restrictions on Cathcart Road. Unfortunately all these discussions have been put on ice due to the recent elections. We will now be back in touch with these agencies as well as with our new City Councillors to resolve these issues once and for all.

View Article  Dumping , rubbish and recycling
There are various sites in Mount Florida where dumping of rubbish, including household items is taking place on an ongoing basis. We are actively trying to remedy this situation to make Mount Florida a nicer place to live. Rubbish should either be disposed of in black bin bags at the communal bin area, or Glasgow City Council can be called to pick up bulk refuse or fridges.

On street rubbish bins should not be used for household rubbish, as they are small and quickly overflow.

We are also concerned about people of all ages throwing away rubbish in the street.

Finally, we are hoping to instigate advertising for increasing the use of the blue recycling bins where paper, carton, tins, and plastic bottles can be disposed of for recycling.

View Article  Parking
One of the issues identified to have an adverse effect on Mount Florida and its residents is parking.

Parking restrictions on Cathcart Road
Parking restrictions on Cathcart Road mean that residents who depend on the car to undertake their shopping find it difficult to find nearby parking. arking restrictions on Cathcart have therefore a serious effect on llocal businesses. We would like to see the parking restrictions on Cathcart Road lifted for the shopping area so that temporary parking will be possible.

Parking Restrictions during Matches/Concerts at Hampden Park
During matches and concerts at Hampden Park, further parking restrictions apply. While nothing can be changed about this, we would like to see better communication with Hampden Park, and have provided links to the events pages of Hampden Park on this website. Hopefully, this means that residents will be better aware of dates and park their cars accordingly.

Parking behaviour
We are also concerned about inconsiderate parking in Mount Florida. No parking signs and road markings are often ignored, and access to streets is often obstructed by cars parked on corners. This is a potential health and safety hazard for emergency vehicles. In addition, cars are parked on pavements or on access points to pavements, thus constituting a dangerous obstacle for wheelchair users and prams.

Park and Ride
Many people use Mount Florida to Park and Ride, leaving their cars near the train station in the morning. This adds to the difficulty of finding parking spaces for local residents.

View Article  Befriending Service
The Befriending Service was founded through listening to our community, residents, and those working in the area. Many people in Mount Florida were found to experience isolation and loneliness. This was confirmed through discussion with the local Medical Centre, and so in conjunction with them a Befriending Service was established. Thisis administered by a project co-ordiinator and trained volunteers.

The service has been in operation since 2003 and is now based at 4 Clincart Road (old Post Office). Members of the community can call in for a chat, a cup of coffee and find out more about befriending. Volunteers come from all walks of life. No experience is necessary, full training is given and expenses are paid.

Make a difference in someone’s life. Be part of a caring team in your community.

The residents of Florida Avenue/Crescent - Cathcart Road have come together with the support of Strathclyde Police to form a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. The advantages of such a scheme are that neighbours can support one another. Residents can share concerns regarding personal safety, youth disorder or home security. Runnign the scheme does not require a large amount of time and support is readily avvailable from the Police. Any residents wishing more information about this scheme or interested in setting up their own scheme should contact PC Nick Quinn, Community Police on 0141 532 5022.
